Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes in Midlothian

We don’t chase perfection—we chase improvement!

Welcome To Our

BJJ Academy

Welcome to 804 Jiu-Jitsu in Midlothian, a veteran-owned BJJ academy for the entire community.

This is a family-oriented environment where students find training built around their goals.

At its core, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a problem-solving art. Every roll presents a new puzzle, and every student learns to think their way through pressure instead of panicking. We blend high-caliber instruction with a tight-knit community where coaches get to know each student’s game—and their goals—well enough to tailor training toward self-defense, fitness, or competition. That same problem-solving mindset carries off the mat, building confidence, humility, and the ability to stay level-headed under stress.

We’re here to help you reach your full potential at 804 Jiu-Jitsu.

Who We Are at

804 Jiu-Jitsu

804 Jiu-Jitsu

Our School

804 Jiu-Jitsu is built on one idea: get a little better than you were yesterday. We’re not interested in comparing you to anyone else — your only competition is who you were in the last class. That mindset gives every student room to stay curious, experiment, and find what actually works for their body and game.

Our coaches build your fundamentals first, then help you shape a game plan around your own strengths and goals. Jiu-Jitsu isn’t one-size-fits-all here — it’s yours to develop, one small improvement at a time.

That growth happens best in the right environment. We keep things clique-free, host regular social gatherings, and run game-based training for kids, so the academy stays a place of fun and togetherness. You get to own your personal journey, backed by a community that’s genuinely rooting for you.

804 Jiu-Jitsu

History

804 Jiu-Jitsu has been a home for the community since opening in 2017, built on a mission to bring Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to students of every age, background, and skill level. That mission carries forward under new ownership: Chuck Berry took the helm in July 2026.

Chuck brings 21 years of active duty service, plus over 20 years on the mats as a grappler. Teaching people to perform under pressure — and to get a little better every single day — has been the throughline of his entire career. That same mindset now shapes how 804 Jiu-Jitsu trains its students: fundamentals first, steady growth, and a coach who’s spent two decades helping people improve at things that matter.

As the academy grows into Chuck’s vision, he’s focused on expanding its offerings so more kids and adults can start their own life-changing Jiu-Jitsu journey.

Owner & Head Instructor Chuck Berry
Chuck Berry
Owner & Head Instructor

Chuck Berry brings more than 20 years of grappling experience to the mat, including 14 years dedicated to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A BJJ black belt under Professor Kelly Grissom (a Leo Dalla black belt), Chuck earned every rank—blue through black—under Professor Grissom’s guidance, a testament to loyalty and consistency rare in the sport. Chuck began his BJJ journey while on active duty in the United States Marine Corps, training for seven years in Stafford, Virginia, before relocating to Richmond and joining the 804 Jiu-Jitsu family in 2018.

A retired Marine with over 21 years of active-duty service, Chuck served as an attack helicopter pilot, forward air controller, operational planner, and defense experiment portfolio manager. A southern New Jersey native, he is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and holds two master’s degrees in military studies. Chuck brings the same discipline, precision, and leadership that defined his military career to every class he teaches—whether you’re stepping onto the mat for the first time or preparing for competition.

Instructor Tony Garr
Tony Garr
Instructor

Tony’s martial arts journey began at Matoaca High School, where he wrestled for four years. Following high school, he transitioned into Mixed Martial Arts at a local gym, training across multiple disciplines and getting his first taste of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Professor Rick McCoy, who awarded him his blue belt. Tony wrapped up his amateur MMA career with a 2–1 record before taking a several-year hiatus from training.

When he returned to the mats, he fully dedicated himself to Jiu-Jitsu. In February 2026, Tony reached a major milestone when Professor Heriberto Lopez awarded him his black belt. Today, he is a proud instructor at 804 Jiu-Jitsu, where he leads the early morning “Dawn Patrol” class. Driven by a passion for lifelong learning and coaching, Tony’s favorite part of the journey is sharing the mats with his daughter, Annalise.

Additionally, Robert competed at the Division 1 level at the Virginia Military Institute. After wrestling, Robert started training BJJ in the fall of 2019 at VMI’s BJJ Club and competed at his first BJJ tournament with them. Robert continued his Jiu-Jitsu Journey at 804 Jiu-Jitsu, joining the team in the Spring of 2020.

Currently, Robert is a 804 Jiu-Jitsu Wrestling Coach and has been teaching wrestling and sharing his grappling and takedown techniques to integrate with BJJ. Robert received his Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Professor Tony Passos/Heriberto Lopez in 2026.

Robert has medaled at every tournament he has competed with the team since joining 804 Jiu-Jitsu. He also assists in coaching our competitors and besides teaching wrestling techniques, he has also become a great Jiu-Jitsu coach
